The WASL
We had an interesting discussion in my methods class today. I had asked a question regarding how to build in time to do Writer's Workshops in an already overloaded class day. The answer I received was disturbing. My professor told us that we are going to have to try and work writing in through integration. There is no longer time in the curriculum to do some of these lessons with the focus being on raising math scores in the state of Washington. I wonder if the politicians in Washington realize that 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day of math instruction does not leave time to cover all of the other subjects. One wonders if, in one to two years, the cry is going to change to, "We must raise our writing scores!" Education still needs to consist of every subject and not just the ones on the test. Writing is a skill that takes TIME to develop. Time that apparently no longer exists. I wonder when the government will realize this fact.
